Challenge: Overcoming Travel Disruption and Enabling Accessibility

The program, designed for senior urban professionals, faced a significant hurdle due to COVID-19 travel restrictions. The traditional five-week in-person modules became untenable. However, this obstacle presented an opportunity to innovate and increase accessibility.

Solution: HyFlex Learning with Benefits

AVer and M&R Communications provided LSE Cities with a state-of-the-art audio and video system, comprising portable and powerful solutions. This enabled the program to move to a hyFlex teaching format, offering several benefits:
• Increased Accessibility for Diverse Learners: Students now have the flexibility to attend modules remotely, reducing travel burdens and opening the program to a wider audience.
• Enhanced Engagement Through Blended Learning: Traditional lectures are replaced with a blend of innovative learning materials, fostering active participation through classroom discussions and peer-to-peer interaction. This caters to various learning styles.
• Improved Learning Outcomes: The hyFlex model allows instructors to tailor their approach to leverage the strengths of both in-person and online learning, potentially improving student outcomes.

Overcoming Obstacles: Speed and Resource Scarcity

The project required rapid implementation to minimize disruption. Global component shortages due to the pandemic added another layer of complexity. However, AVer and M&R rose to the challenge, ensuring a smooth transition.

Technology as a Catalyst for Success

The core of the solution lies in the AVer PTZ Link software. It bridges the gap between AVer's immersive video conferencing technology and Shure's Microflex® Complete Wireless conference system. This creates a seamless voice tracking solution for clear communication and collaboration across physical and virtual spaces. LSE Cities utilizes AVer's PTC310U auto tracking cameras in most hybrid spaces and the PTC500S dual lens auto tracking cameras for larger venues.

A Transparent Learning Experience

"The biggest win is that the technology seamlessly integrates into the learning environment," says Jim Osbourne, Executive MSc Manager at LSE Cities. "Everyone can see and hear each other perfectly, allowing for natural and clear discussions." This case study demonstrates how educational institutions can leverage technology to embrace change and create innovative hyFlex learning models with improved accessibility, engagement, and ultimately, learning outcomes. The future of hyFlex learning in education holds promise for creating a more inclusive and effective learning experience for all students.
